Pre-School in Marlow Bottom and Hazlemere

Pre-School

Overview

By the time children reach Pre-School, something shifts. Friendships start to matter in a way they didn't before, conversations get longer and more curious, and children begin to want to do things for themselves, from getting their own coat on to having a real say in what they play next. Our Pre-School room, for children aged 3 to 5, is built around that shift. With a ratio of 1:8, staff have room to work alongside children rather than simply supervise them, whether that's extending a conversation about why the leaves are changing colour or helping a child count out enough plates for everyone at snack time.

A Typical Day

The day is structured but child-led, moving across all seven areas of the EYFS so that early literacy and number work sit naturally alongside music, construction, role play and physical challenge. Children get daily access to the garden and mud kitchen, and outdoor learning is treated as a normal part of the week rather than a special outing. Indoors, the art studio gives children space to make deliberate choices about colour, materials and what they want to create, which feeds directly into the confidence and problem-solving skills this age group is working hard to build. Meals are freshly cooked on site, and children who still need a quiet rest after lunch are given that space without it being made into a big deal.

Care & Development

School readiness runs through the room without dominating it. Sitting for a short group activity, following a two-step instruction, or waiting a turn are all skills being quietly practised through play, and each spring we hold a dedicated Preparing for School meeting so parents know exactly where their child is and what the transition will involve. This is also where the nursery's family-run character shows itself most clearly to parents, in the honesty of those conversations. Margaret opened the nursery in 2000 when her own son Jack was a baby, and the Certificate of Achievement she was later awarded by Buckinghamshire County Council reflects the same standards still running through the Pre-School room today, backed up by our Good Ofsted rating.

Why Families Choose Us

None of this works without parents. Staff share what's happening in the room through daily conversation and termly updates, and where a child needs extra support with behaviour or emotional wellbeing, we work through it together rather than handling it in isolation, so the same approach is used both at nursery and at home.
